Get Organized Today by
Assigning Each Item a Home
Some people tend to misplace or lose certain things more than others. Maybe you put your keys down and cannot remember where you left them, perhaps you lose your glasses on a regular basis, or you can't remember where you placed that important document you got in the mail.
This can be extremely frustrating. If you are in a hurry, it really is the last thing that you need.
One of the easiest ways to get organized and prevent the 'misplaced item' syndrome is to have a "home" for everything that you use. The items that you misplace on a regular basis are the ones that are in most desperate need of a consistent "home".
Sometimes organization is just a matter of having the necessary amount of storage space, while other times, it is more a matter of discipline and sticking with a system that works for you.
Whatever the case may be in your situation, the following tips may help.
Organize you storage space - Most homes and offices come with built-in storage space: closets, drawers, etc. Still, we have all opened a kitchen drawer and seen its contents pop out at us because it is so full. This is an ineffective way of storing things. Drawers and closets that hold small items can be broken down into smaller storage spaces by using a divider or an in-drawer/in-closet organizer. This way, small items do not disappear completely into a black hole. You can prioritize the way that you store things by placing little used items towards the back of a closet or towards the bottom of a drawer, leaving often used items right up front and easy to grab.
Give each item a "home" - If you give all of your possession, large or small, a consistent place that they naturally belong, they will always be easier to store and find.
This leads us to our next issue; consistently placing items where they belong. This is sometimes the hardest thing for people to do, but once you get in the habit, you won't even have to think about it.
It may take a little bit of practice to walk into your home, hang
your coat up on its hook, place the keys on the key hook and place
your glasses in their case. In fact, it may even feel somewhat rigid
at first; however, the benefits of these kinds of small habits are
endless. A behavior change like this will mean that you will no
longer have to deal with the frustration of having to tear the house
apart to find a set of keys or a bill that you know is past due.
Make a small investment in some extra storage space for your home whether that means, organizers, hooks, drawer sets or other useful items and assign a home for everything that you use. It will not be long before you will clearly see the benefits and losing keys or glasses will be a thing of the past.
