There are so many reasons to learn a new language. While English is the culturally dominant language of the early Twenty First Century, the majority of people in the world cannot speak it and so, if you really want to call yourself a citizen of the world, it is necessary to speak more than just the one language. Fortunately, there are options open to you. The first and most popular option is to take a language course. This can take the form of a self-taught course, using compact discs and text books, or it can be in a language school; either as part of a group or individually.

One popular reason for British people to learn a new language is in anticipation of emigrating abroad, either in retirement or as an economic exile, fed up with the cost of living in the United Kingdom and perceived wastage of taxation on public services which are often viewed as bad value for money. While not all Britons who move to Spain actually take the time to learn Spanish, those who do undeniably enjoy the country more as they are able to communicate with local people in the way that monoglots cannot. The same is true of the recent grey-haired British invasion of France. Despite being taught in almost every secondary school in the united Kingdom, many exiles consider the learning the French language a step too far. This is a shame as courses to learn French are available all over the UK and there are plenty of opportunities to practice the language with the stream of ambitious young French people heading across the Channel in search of the Great British Pound.

If you can already speak Spanish or French, learning Italian is not too great a step. Courses to learn Italian are less common than French or Spanish courses, largely because so many fewer people speak Italian around the world. All of the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian) originally evolved from the vulgar Latin spoken by Roman soldiers.

Learning other European languages is comparatively easy. At least we share an alphabet, give or take an accent here and an umlaut there. For a real challenge, the most intriguing languages are to be found on other continents not successfully conquered by the Romans. If you want to learn Japanese there are a huge selection of courses available, the majority of which are to be found in and around the London area. Similarly, courses to learn Arabic can be found in all parts of the capital and beyond.

If you are looking for a new challenge, learning a new language is a great way to keep your mind ticking over while soaking up something that is very rewarding and enjoyable. Many people find language learning addictive, particularly after exercising newly acquired language skills overseas.
